Internships

Through our IDEAL Internship Program, LPFI searches for and connects quality companies and nonprofit organizations with high caliber IDEAL Scholars.  IDEAL Scholars are top-notch undergraduate students at UC Berkeley, and they understand the value of gaining meaningful work experience to supplement their education.  We are always actively seeking new partnerships with employers.  LPFI looks forward to ensuring an enriching summer experience for employer and intern alike.

Where have past interns worked?

Past interns have worked in law and engineering firms, the offices of elected officials, in medical clinics and hospitals, at not-for-profit organizations, and at a television station, among numerous other places.

What kinds of work do interns do?

When seeking internship opportunities, we want to make sure that both the student and the employer have a meaningful experience. We match potential internship providers with scholars based on the employer’s needs and the intern’s skills and interests. Interns should be involved with challenging, thought-provoking work. Employers should also help interns to understand the structure and management of the organization.

How long are the internships and what are the hours?

We work to create an internship of up to ten weeks during the summer based on the student’s availability and the employer’s work needs.  Internships can be full- or part-time. Internships can start as soon as the spring semester ends at Berkeley (May 14th, 2010), and can last until the beginning of the fall semester (August 19th, 2010). Of course, we’re glad to make exceptions for great opportunities.

How much does it cost to host an intern?

So that students do not have to sacrifice relevant internship experience in order to earn a summer income, we prefer that organizations provide a stipend ($3,000 per summer) for the interns. If an organization can provide a terrific summer work experience for a student but cannot compensate the student in part or full, limited funds are available from LPFI to fund the internship.

How do we set up an internship with IDEAL?

If you have a summer internship opportunity for one or more of our IDEAL Scholars for summer 2010 or beyond, please e-mail Sumaiya Talukdar, LPFI's Scholarship and Internship Coordinator, or call her at 415-946-3047. Please provide us with the following information:
